Allahabad is famous for the Sangam -- the confluence of the Ganga, the Yamuna and the invisible Saraswati Rivers. The Sangam, also known as Triveni, is especially sacred to Hindus. Among the largest cities of Uttar Pradesh, Allahabad city boasts of excellent educational institutions, technical institutions and higher education institutes. In contrast the rural areas of the district present a sorry picture -- they are backward, with little or no amenities. Western part of the district, bordering Bundelkhand, are even more problematic and have much in common with that region. Even after separation of Kaushambi district, Allahabad is a large district with an area of 5,248 sq km, and very high population density. Allahabad has got eight tehsils (sub-districts) and 20 development blocks. SSA works in Shankargarh development block of Allahabad district.
